They are complementary features - aliases are not a replacement for the forwarding feature.
The forwarding option allows you to redirect the mail for a particular user to somewhere else (i.e. offsite to some remote location), optionally storing a local copy of the mail.
The (unsupported) e-smith-alias RPM allows you to set up general email aliases, so you can do things like direct "support@my.dom.ain" to a list of users.
