ETRN understanding
« on: October 24, 2002, 05:46:11 PM »
Hi all,

I need some help to understand ETRN.

I can see that in the e-smith email retrevial section there is very little to enter in if using ETRN.

So I do I canfigure e-smith to use ETRN ?

I have found a good ISP who uses linux themselves and fully support ETRN and are happy that I am using Linux.

E-smith is sat behind a reuter which has  a static ip address.  I know I will have to do port forwarding of the the mail port to the e-smith server.

The server has two network interfaces.

One is 192.168.0.x  which is the on the same subnet of the reuter so that it can get access to the internet.

The other is on 192.168.1.x which is the local lan.

This I think should allow the server to be the firewall.

What information do I need to provide to the isp apart from the ip address of the reuter that is visible on the net ?

Is there any log files I can read that will help me understand if ETRN is working correctly ?

I want e-smith to get a get mail via ETRN and distribute it to all the mailboxes locally.

I need some help as I have not used ETRN before.

The client was going to use M$ SBS but I convinced them to use e-smith as I use it myself but I have not configured e-smith to use ETRN before.

I could use multi-drop email but aparently alot of people have problems with it.  ETRN is supposed to be easier to setup and more reliable. Am I correct.

Thanks in advance.

additional info

Server has a permanent connection to internet via the ADSL reuter which keeps the connection live.

ETRN stands for Enhanced Turn. It is an improved implementation of the turn standard. It works by talking to the smtp server that your isp has set up to receive your mail to first send mail and then telling the remote SMTP server to turn around and send mail to you. The important thing is that you must have a static ip that your isp knows about.  The good thing about ETRN is that is just using SMTP so it keeps all the envelope information so mail can be more reliably delivered.
To set it up you will need to forward port 25 to the ip address of the SME (the nic that is on the the same segment as the router) and then just put in the ip address or host name of the isp's mail server and then set your collection times. You will have to liase closely with your isp to get there end properly set up though.

Hope this helps

Hi andy,

thanks for replying.

The isp uses linux themselves and are pretty knowledgeable.

I believe its fetchmail that goes and gets the mail.

Is there any log files or something else on the server that I can use to diagnose what e-smith is doing.

Does ETRN log info appear in mesg  for instance ?

thanks.
