Man....I am a Novice at all this stuff.  Still learning.....

We just installed a T-1 line here and I have two channels for Internet Access at 128K.  I recently built a new machine for the E-Smith program using two 3COM 10/100 PCI LAN Cards.  I need to know the following....

Do I need a cross-over patch cord or connection between the E-Smith machine and the Cisco router that is hooked to the DSU/CSU?  We are running directly from the Internet connection (DSU/CSU>CISCO Router) directly to the LAN card in the E-Smith machine.  Since we are not using a hub....I do think I need a cross over connection.

Can anyone confirm that?

Hello,
I can take a stab at this since it is not really an E-smith question. I do not know the Cisco router specifically but there are couple of basic things.
1.) Do you get a link light when you plug the cables in? Generally a link light on the 3com card is a good sign. If you are having problems, you might have the wrong ethernet card plugged in. I was lucky when I setup my system that I picked the right card first.
2.) If you were to plug your Router into your Hub, do you need to plug into the "Uplink" port of the hub? If you do, chances are that you need a crossover cable. The Uplink port generally has the crossover built right into it so that you can use a normal cable.

See if any of this makes sense.
