new install/dup nic's
« on: October 27, 2002, 11:56:21 PM »
Hi, hope not stupid newbie question.

Just installed 4.1.2 all seems fine, except unable to access internet.

Currently using 2 x 3com905tx nic.  Internal network running fine but just can't get access outside via my NTL cablemodem although lights do seem to be coming on modem and network card at the same time as if receiving data.

Anything that you can think to check ??

Just in process of setting external nic to eth0 - this is also set to use DHCP using ethernet identifier (as not using NTL username).

eth0 in the internal netowrk card and now configured to eth1 I think ?

Thanks

have you tried resetting the modem... mine woudn't give out a valid ip if I just swapped the cable. One hard reset (10 secs without power) on the modem and everything went smooth afterwards

have tried rebooting cable modem although only for a few seconds, although this method works fine for win9x and gets ip straight away.

2nite will try different model network card just incase and then notes form following link :  http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=4860.msg16958#msg16958

Some cable modem providers will "marry" the MAC address of the network card to the cable modem, so, if you change network cards, you'll have to call your ISP and ask them to reset your modem ( I had to do that on mine ), just tell them that you changed computer.

swapped external network card to intel and works fine

damn me why i couldn't get working with identical cards, shame really as using nice fast/reliable 3com 3C905C-TX-M cards.

might have another play later this week.  for now off to try installing e-mail system, firewall monitor, virus checker etc etc

new toy, so much fun

thanks for help guys

I have the same problem with the 3Com cards and Also Netgear FA310 or 311.

With the 3Com card I can only get access to the server not the internet, only difference is I am using a 3Com ISDN router.

Anyone any other ideas apart from changing NIC to Intel??
