Topic: Setting up a dial-up on RCN

Oooh Boy. Am I in for it I think. I bought E-smith to work with my @home cable modem and within a reasonable amount of time and the use of the manual got it setup. Some help from you all got me accessing my @home mail etc.

So, I decided to set this up for my church using a dial-up connection into RCN. Now never using Linux before but knowing my way around DOS I have been somewhat lost. Pico, isn't that a type of dip?

After scouring this news group and some other reading, I found my log files and took a look. My PAP is failing authorization. I edited PAP secrets, CHAP secrets etc. Finally logged into ISP and first thing RCN says under Linux is that they don't use PAP/CHAP authorization. They then proceed to show me 3 files I need to create and 3 scripts. I don't even know how to copy those lines to my e-smith server.

Oooh boy what a mess.

Just thought I would vent. I am going to try it tomorrow though and see what happens.

Hi Jon,

I don't know who or what RCN is, but I assume that it is an ISP.
It's quite unusual to find an ISP which does not use PAP authentication (since that is what win9x uses by default). But you have looked in the logfile and found a PAP authentication problem.

I doubt that you will need to use 3 files and 3 scripts. You may need to make one or two small changes. What I suggest that you do is first check that you know the correct password - try connecting to RCN using win95, for instance. Then if you can email me RCN's suggestions I can have a look at them and see what you really need to do.
