hi  i have a alcatel speedtouch pro im not sure what you mean by connection type ? but the modem is connected to a second nic in the 5.5 server, then there is 4 pcs connected via a hub to the first  nic .

Then the connection should be set to "dedicated" in the text configuration program, and then if you need for the SMEserver to logon to the ADSL network, specify PPP over Ethernet (it then asks you for the username and password), else specify Static or DHCP.

i have followed what you  said ,my isp has issued a static ip ,if i set my sme box to log on using dhcp will it assign the static ip to the modem or the second nic, this is what i dont understand ,will i need to forward packets from the modem to the sme box ??

If you have a static IP then you will need to select option 4 (use static IP) from the admin interface when setting up the external interface. Your ISP will have given you the IP, subnet and gateway settings required for setting up this interface. The speedtouch modems come configured with all the required settings for operating in bridged mode, so there is no need to make any mods to the ADSL modem. BTW, who is your ISP?

i set the modem up as requested by the isp ,which is a company called westnet here in WA  ,they told me to remove all the default settings in the modem  and enter thier connection only which i did .when the modem is swithced on it connects to the isp as the password ,dns etc is all entered into the modem settings .is this correct ?from what you have just explained it sounds like im trying to set it up wrong .what is assigned the static ip ? the modem or the second network card ?  i gather that assisning the static ip in option 4 sets this to the second nic .thanks  daz

Yes that's correct, the modem will act as a bridge and just pass everything onto the SME server. The second interface has the static IP assigned to it.

Yes, I have exactly this setup running at the moment (Alcatel Speed Touch Home with static IP, ISP TPG in Sydney). If you are not running any servers, then yes you can setup the modem to have the static IP and it will do all the routing for your network, otherwise you run the modem in what they called "bridged mode" and setup the sme server with the static IP.
