Topic: How to setup DHCP on cable modem

I successfully installed e-smith server & gateway for my @home
cable modem service using static ip address. But it does not
work with DHCP on even after disabling DNS because @home
service provides DNS service. I changed server name using
e-smith manager but it still does not work.

I will appreciate if you could provide me step by step instructions
as I am new to lynix environment.

I had a problem setting up my cable modem too, but it was that my cables were reversed.  I find (at least on my machine) e-smith uses eth1 as the external connection you can check this by doing an ifconfig from the command prompt.

Thanks for your tips. I will try swapping my cables on NICs and let everyone know
if it works. I could not figure out the solution from previous threads when Oliver
had similar problems.

If you go to a command prompt and type ifconfig it will show you the ip address assigned to your network cards, then you can see if it is choosing eth1 as your external or not.

Hi John,

Yes, I will try ifconfig. But I think since I can connect to internet that means
eth1 is already assigned with external ip address. Last night I tried with swapping cables on NICs but then I lost internet connection. So that is why I think eth1 is connected to external ip.

Thanks for your suggestion. Last night I checked my NICs by using ifconfig
command. And found that Eth1 is connected to external IP. So nothing wrong
with the NICs configuration.
