Topic: SME and WinXP

In SME 5.5 I did www.mydomain.com ( I don't have a real domain ) during install. The name of my SME box is mysmeserver. In Configuration/WorkGroup I have smebox. Server name is mysmeserver. I've created a user named palani. I did not configured anything else on the SME server. On my WinXp box I have mine for Full Computer Name and WOrkgroup I have SMEBOX. I also have Clients for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing enabled. For some reason I am unable to log onto my SME box using palani. Obviously I am missing a step or two or perhaps more. Any thoughts how I can get this to work?

We need a little more info.

What exactly do you mean you are unable to log onto SME using palani ?

Did you :-

a) Set SME as a Domain controller and remembered to :-
i) Apply the signorseal registry change to Windows XP
ii) Joined the XP box to the SMEBOX domain
iii) use the same username and password on both SME and on the XP box
iv) You are running XP Pro and NOT XP Home

or

b) Set SME as a Workgroup server and :-
i) apply the signorseal registry change to XP
ii) Log in to XP locally using the same username and password as you created on SME

If (b), you don't really "log in" to the server per se, you can browse / map drives / etc as long as your XP username and password combination matches the account created on SME.

More info would b helpful.

Firstly, go into your server manager and create a user called "palani" with the same password as the user "palani" on your WinXP box.

Then logout, login and check again.

I changed some names and did the following:

1. My SME machine name is smeserver1
2. My Windows Workgroup in SME is smegroup
3. My WindowsXP computer name is MINE

A. I set SME as a Workgroup and Domain controller

B. Joined the XP box to the SMEBOX domain
(I think I did. Is doing steps 1 and 2 above the way to do this? If not can you please explain?)

C. I am using the username palani and password on on both SME and  XP
D  I am running XP Pro and NOT XP Home

I have no idea how to apply the signorseal registry change to Windows XP. I know it has to do with the registry. What do I type? And where do I put it?

When I click on the Map Drive icon in My Computer Windows Explorer etc. and then click Browse I am able to see Smegroup under Microsoft Windows Network. On my Windows machine I tried Start/Run and typed \smeserver1\palani and also \smeserver1\rpms but to no avail. I created rpms in i-bay
