Recommendation for ADSL modem/Router

Can someone from the UK, make a recommendation for an ADSL modem or router which will definatly allow VPN (Windows pptp) packets through to the SMEServer.

Thanks

I have used the Alcatel Speed Touch Home ethernet modems in this configuration, I believe these are available in the UK (from what I read anyway)

Some are available, but perhaps you could confirm that you have used VPN through them, also the model number?

Hi,

I can confirm I have used the Alcatel Speedtouch 510 (ethernet) modem with 3DES IPVPN packets running through, and it works fine. I suspect PPTP will run no different.  I just make sure the internal firewall is off and run my security in on a seperate server.

Hope this helps

As I understand it, as long as you get an ADSL modem (NOT a router with a modem built in), and connect that modem to the external interface of your SME server, it should work. Any normal ADSL modem should not block VPN or any protocol for that matter, otherwise return it as "crippleware".

A router / firewall with a built in ADSL modem is another story....

The Efficient Networks (also branded as BT) 5861 router will do this pass through without any problems.  If you have the BT version you might need to hack into it, change the firmware and then use the command line to set the VPN passthrough.

Hi Brian

Both the Netgear 814 and the D-Link 504 claim to have VPN pass through. I've read confirming reports (can't put my hands on it right now) about the Netgear.

Thanks for the responses, actually my problem turned out to be user error (not me!), and things are fine now

Cheers
