Topic: What do you people do for Outlook2K users ?

Hi all,

I really do like the e-smith server and all that goes with it. One place however bugs me is sharing Outlook Address books etc etc.

What do you guys/gals out there do in the real world. I've tried LDAP but didn't get it working as I'd like.

Have I missed something or are there some neat ways to achieve the same type of shared addresses etc that you could get throuhg, say, Exchange ?

any advice here would be great.

Hi,

I've been having the same troubles as you had. I now have a fantastic working LDAP directory server. Try http://www.pegacat.com/jxplorer. They have a really good LDAP editor in Java. Give that a try. Also you may want to look into another technology called ACAP, although, I have not had much success implementing this. What troubles are you having with the LDAP server, as it sounds like it's just what you need!

Does the jxplorer integrate etc with Outlook2K ?

I've actually gone over to Netscape mail, as we use IMAP, and Outlook is just not a good enough client with IMAP for us.

I think to get the LDAP thing going in Outlook you need to create a new Directory Service account, and tick the Check Names against this server option. Then you can search it, and addresses on emails will be searched on the LDAP server. It's not quite ideal, but it will let you share the address book!

JXplorer is basically another program which will let you (or your users) edit the LDAP address book, and also add new addresses, etc. (You can't edit or add addresses in Outlook)

I haven´t tried it myself, yet, but I am going to really soon. It looks perfect and a lot of people in this forum says that it IS great.

It is great, but it isn't "installable' on a SME server. It installs on a seperate machine.

He linked to the Insight Connector, which installs on the client and lets it do Exchange stuff on a regular IMAP server.

Hello Math, and others

I follow this discusion about LDAP and you sugest a java tool.

On the first site a great tool, but a few question's

How to log on you own ldap tree:

I found the follow things

base DN : dc=serverdomain,dc=countiecode
                (You find it on servermanager-Change LDAP directory settings)

the root password of the LDAP you can find in "etc/openldap/slapd.conf"
on the row with "rootpw" (you find the root LDAP password)

How do jou fill in de logon screen of that java client whith root permisons so you can edit all information in this.?

How can I let a user use thes tool for acces to these information.

On this moment I have connect serveral LDAP's on SME server but only in the read mode.

I think we can beter start a new thread so I post this twice with a new subject.

What else does an Exchange/Outlook config give that SME/Insight Connector/Exchange gives?

$39 is seemingly a very cost effective way implementing calendar sharing etc and would allow me to remove the NT box running exchange from my home network.

P.S. I take it as this is a client plugin for Outlook, web based access to the mail server would still work for data still residing on it.

I've been going through the threads on Insight Connector and eSmith (5.1.2 for me). I haven't been convinced that it's gonna be worthwhile. We were going to look at getting Exchange but am still not sure if it is worth it.

Could someone please tell me if this is what Insight Connector will do:

Allow users to:

1) share Address Book from the E-smith server
2) share Appointments etc etc
3) Look at mail via Browser
4) Store mail on the server rather than the desktop.

Anything else ?

are there any drawbacks ?

Any help on this would be great. I haven't got the best knowledge of Linux/IMAP/ACLs etc (I suppose that's why I'm using eSmith !) so please bear with me.
