I've been having the same troubles as you had. I now have a fantastic working LDAP directory server. Try
http://www.pegacat.com/jxplorer. They have a really good LDAP editor in Java. Give that a try. Also you may want to look into another technology called ACAP, although, I have not had much success implementing this. What troubles are you having with the LDAP server, as it sounds like it's just what you need!
