Topic: ntop & 5.6

Hi

I am just downloading the 5.6 iso (unsupported version). Whilst it comes down I have been planning what I need to soprt out to get myserver up and running to my spec. I the new version of the port forwarding RPM - but need to know if I need a newer version of the port opening rpm that Darrell May does.

Also I use Ntop version 2.2.2 on my current v5.5 which I was able to compile and run using the helpful instructions provided by Dillard Blom & Harro Bruins. Now my question here is has anybody got ntop to work with 5.6 and if so which version and do you have some instructions?

Hi there,

I have been using ntop with e-smith 5.6 beta 7 successfully. I'm using the rpm build provided by myezserver http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/contrib/ntop/
download all files and install with the install.sh script.

You don't need a port opening rpm at all - it's not very useful, and has confused many people.

By itself, opening ports on your gateway does not help you to run software on your client (likely Windows) machines.

You should only open ports on the server if you have installed additional software on the server which needs those ports open. If there is an e-smith-* package to configure that additional software, it will already have opened the ports that you need open (via a template fragment). If there isn't such a package, there may be a HOWTO which tells you exactly which custom templates you need to open the appropriate ports.

Right 3 things on the go now.

1) I got ntop down and installed using the script all went fine. Except when ever I try to get ntop up it won't let me in as I guess it is nolonger on port 3777. How do I find out which port it is using?

2) I tried to install the port forwarding rpm but found out I also needed to install the updated packetfilter rpm (Just for anybody who may be thinking of going down this route).

3) Port opening rpm - it has been said that this is confusing and no longer recommended. The reason why I asked this is one of my  servers is running an older version of redhat (because its the only distro for this particular machine) and has apache configured to use a non standard port. Also I sometimes VNC into my network from outside. I suppose I have to open these ports using alternative means ... could somebody explain the proceedure for this - bearing in mind I am still relativly green when it comes to Linux!
