Topic: Backup before upgrade??

Have managed to download a copy of the 5.6 ISO and whilst I know it is good practice to backup the server before upgrading I would like to know if it is absolutely necessary or will the change to the ext3 journaling system preserve my data??

The reason being  I have uploaded alot of data onto the SME box since the last backup which would be useful to keep but probably not worth spending a whole day backing up!!

Hello Paul

I would definitely backup prior ro upgrade using something like ghost. My system had 2 poblems during the upgrade to 5.6. Luckily I had a backup.

The ext3 file system will preserve your existing data, but of course you are very strongly encouraged to do a full system backup first. I have done many upgrades with no loss of data; YMMV, but I doubt that it will.

Stick to your basic Sys admin practices always backup your systems before major upgrades.

BACK IT UP!  My server is screwed due to the 5.5 to 5.6 migration.  I am currently reimaging and starting over.  nice!

I also ran into a couple of snags with the upgrade from 5.5 to 5.6 .  Do the backup!
