Kernel panic

Kernel panic
« on: January 23, 2003, 01:54:07 AM »
After what seems like a successful installation of E-Smith 5.6, on bootup I receive the following message:
Kernel panic: kernel compiled for PPro+, requires PGE feature!

I have installed on a Cyrix 6x86 based machine. E-Smith 5.5 installs and runs successfully.

Anybody able to help as I am relatively inexperienced with this software.

Many thanks,

Gary

Is this a clean install on the same machine that 5.5 runs fine on?

Have you tried upgrading the 5.5 that works fine?

Hi Eric,

I downloaded the version 5.6 developer release, burned on to a CD and booted a machine with a previous Linux (not E-Smith) installation.

I then tried installing v5.5 with no problem.

I reformatted the disk and reinstalled v5.6 and the error reoccurred.

What is the best method for trying an upgrade? I haven't done this before.

Cheers,

Gary

Hi,

I have just tried an upgrade using the 'upgrade' option of the v5.6 installation CD. This fails while checking for packages to update. No error messages to be seen - it just seems to kill all processes and eject the CD ready for reboot.

Cheers,

Gary
