proxy cacheing and dialondemand
« on: January 23, 2003, 04:43:27 AM »
im wanting to set this up on a p1 system as a gateway   i do not have the space to let it run a proxy or if it does can i limit how much it can write  or can i just disable it completely (preferred) also im using dialup connection  so how do i implement dial on demand  so that the server will connect anytime a connection is requested or needed

I dont know much about setting up squid to only use a certain amount of space, but I run SME 5.5 U3 on a p75 with a 2 GB HDD and only use about 800MB on it.

When you first install SME it will ask you how often should it dial/hangup. Never, Short, Medium, Long or Continuous are the options.

I _think_ that whenever a client requests it then it will dial, the above settings are timeout before hanging up I _think_ .

I run a dial-up here and just have it set for continuous as thats the plan we are on, and we only get booted off ever 3 to 4 days, (as shown in /var/log/accounting) but I have never tryed the timeout settings as we do have a dedicated phone line.

Recently I moved, I'm not longer able to get broadband.  I use E-smith 4.1.2 on a very old P90 laptop with an external modem attached.  I've configured dial-on demand to use the Short setting.

Cyrus is correct, the Never, Short, Medium, Long, and Cont. settings affect how long you stay connected during periods of no traffic.

With my setting set to short, it disconnects about 3 to 5 minutes after no data has been send/received.  When I initiate a internet request (ping, web, ssh, anything requiring outside access) it starts to dial..and stays connected as long as I am surfing.

I've disabled SQUID because I'd rather have raw access to the pages and let my client browser do the caching as necessary.

Hope this helped,
Nathan
