You aren't blind...

All the 3c509 cards I have ever seen are ISA. The e-smith automated install only supports PCI ethernet cards. E-smith is built on RedHat Linux so the modules are there -- if you know how to use them. But, the setup program is intended to eliminate ANY need to know how to manually edit Unix/Linux configuration files -- and the only practical way to do that is to limit the e-smith scripts to supported PCI NICs.

The e-smith manual can be used a shopping list: people who are hesitant to even remove the cover from their computer can take the manual to their local computer shop and purchase an inexpensive  machine built from almost any combination of new and/or used parts with reasonable assurance that e-smith will work fine (as long as the shop is trustworthy).

It's the best of both worlds...if you know nothing about Linux, you can simply select your hardware from the supported list and e-smith will take care of everything for you...and if you do know a little bit about Linux, you can use obsolete (cheaper or free) hardware and rely upon e-smith to configure all the difficult networking/samba/web/e-mail applications.

There was a message on 12/19/99 that described how to change the GUI to include the 3c509 card.  I tried it this weekend, it worked for me and got an old 486 online.

Bob,

I found your message on the forum,
but I can't find the older message,
I try to work with an Isa NE2000 compatible card,
so if you can help me, I shall be able to be online with my
old 486 , too !

Thanks in advance
Sergio
