Disable Anonymous FTP?
« on: February 13, 2003, 05:31:02 PM »
OK, hopefully this is a simple question. I installed the latest verison of SME and I need to allow certain people FTP access to their directories. The problem is that no matter what setting I choose, anonymous FTP is still enabled.

How do I disable anonymous FTP so that their connection is immediatley refused and they cannot login at all. I am trying to make this as secure as possible.

Thanks,
Mike

Dear Mike

In the server manager, ibay setup, just don't enable ftp for each ibay, that will stop anonymous users accessing the ibays by ftp.
ie
Public access via web or anonymous ftp - None
(or one of the Local network settings if you want your LAN users to ftp to the ibays)

I think these settings in server manager, Remote access panel, would be appropriate

FTP user account access - Public

FTP access limits - Normal usage
If you set it to Disable FTP entirely then your users will not be able to ftp to their home folders.

The trick in sme is to get the right combination of settings.

By the way ftp is NOT secure, so why use it anyway. Your users should VPN into the server and then map drives they have access rights to, which would automatically include their home folder, and any ibays you make them a member of by group membership.
