Email Problems
« on: February 25, 2003, 03:32:39 AM »
We have a E-smith 4.1.2 box that handles all our internal and external email.  I collects our external mail from a POP3 server.

Over the weekend we seemed to stop receiving emails.  I checked with the POP3 provider and the server has collected the messages as it is suppost to.  Upon digging further I found all the messages in var/spool/smtpd/spool folder.

What seems to be happening is SMTPD is collecting the messages OK, but whatever is next in the mail delivery process is not correctly getting the messages and delivering them to the required users.

Has anyone seen this before or know what could be happening ??

I am also running RAV anti-virus,  and restarted the server just before we started having these problems.....

I managed to get it going again by starting smtpfwdd from the command line.  It seems a large attachment might have caused the forwarder to barf.  Strange that a restart didn't help..

Hi Bill,

As a question, can you configure SME to clear multiple POP mailboxes at the ISP?

Glad you got the problem sorted out!

Cheers,

SME out of the box does not support collecting mail from multiple POP mailboxes.

I use an addon by Vincent (he calls it the fetchmail generator) which does an excellent job. It supports multiple pop mailboxed for each user (you can collect from >=25? mailboxes per user !)

His last known link was at www.e-smith.dyndns.org but I think that is not valid anymore. I think some of the users might have mirrors / copies available.

There's also a contrib by Stephen Noble as well. I personally prefer Vincent's.
