Qmail 4.4.2 error
« on: February 25, 2003, 07:44:25 PM »
Hope this is the place to post this. I've been getting a 4.4.2 error after trying to send attachments.  I have no problem receiving attachments or sending emails without attachments,  just can't send even a 1k txt file. Now I don't want to tweak on the server too much as everything else had been going fine up until DirecTVDSL went out of business. I had to switch over to BellSouth and that's when the problems started.  I am running SME 5.5 with the latest service packs.  I called BellSouth and, of course they said it was not on their side, and they would love to help me IF I was running Windows and Exchange but they know nothing about "Linux and highly customized, third-party software".  UGH!  Any help would be most appreciated.

When you configured the machine, you didn't have it use your ISP's mail server to send messages, did you?  If so, when DirectvDSL went under ( I now use Speakeasy SDSL 1.5Mbit ) if you configured that box to send to the ISP's mail server and now you've moved over to bellsouth, that could be your root cause.

I see the 4.4.2 in your case as your box trying to route outgoing messages through the DirectvDSL mail server, which probably is no long accessible, or fails because you would be "relaying" from an external host, outside their network.

Glance at your mail settings, note that there is no real benefit to using the ISP provided mailserver since your SME box can handle it with little or no problems.

Thanks for the response, Nathan.  No never used the ISP's mail server.  I had/have a static IP and hosted my own domain.  I control DNS via DYNDNS.org.  We can send and receive messages, and receive attachments, just not send them.  It's not a size limit, nothing has changed on the server side.  I even have a router between the DSL modem and the Server, so, as far as the server is concerned, nothing has changed. May try to set one of my other servers (different location/ISP/actually a T-1) up to relay for this server.  I'll have to figure out if I can do this exclusively for this server and not the whole internet!  It is completely baffling...

From your SME box, can you see if you can hit stickit.nu on port 25.  Try to issue a HELO and see if you can connect and interact with the server.  I wonder if BLS is doing something strange.

I have tried the HELO command on other servers and it works fine.  I've even sent mail from other servers with this trick. Thanks for you help here Nathan.  I'm on the phone again with BellSouth.  I think I'm just going to cancel service with them and switch to another company.  They don't know what the heck thet're doing.  This guy is telling me it's the security settings on my server.  Not!!!

If you switch, check out speakeasy.net, their a little high but they have nice service.  I was in the same boat you were with the DSL switch, it was a huge head-ache.  If you wan't, we can coordinate our efforts via SSH or something like that.  I actually work for the Bellsouth Yellow Pages and am pretty familiar with their DSL service.
