Eth0 shuts down when "starting network OK"
« on: March 01, 2003, 10:56:37 PM »
Hi,

I recently installed 5.5 on a box for a friend of mine and everything was working well, but the processor was a little slow (233Mhz).

So, I replaced the processor, but upon rebooting the system, everything was fine, but for whatever reason, when the message "starting network ..... OK" message comes up, the link light on eth0 interface shuts off.  This is, of course, the WAN interface to the ISP.

I've had a similar problem in a 5.6 box that I got around by moving the e-net card to another slot, booted, then back to the original slot, and booting again, but that doesn't work in this machine.

Again, when the machine is first powered on, both NICs have link lights.  But when the message "starting network....OK" pops up, eth0 shuts down.

How can I restart it?

Thanks.

Kelvin

Hi Mark,

I suggest running the configuration screens again nad make sure the network cards are still being detected in the correct order.

That seems like a good idea, but they're the same card.  RTL8139too is the driver, so there's no way to know which is which.

Any other ideas?

I'll still try that of course.

Hi Mark,

Usually, and I say "usually", cards are recognised starting from the card nearest the AGP slot (but not always :-)).
