5.6 Trying To Get Thru The Firewall On Port 53?
« on: March 09, 2003, 06:32:09 AM »
I've been checking the logs on my IPCop box (which the SME Server is behind) and they show a LOT of hits on Port 53 (Domain) from the SME Box trying to get OUT.

Any particular reason why?

I did a search in the forums first and found nothing. Thanks! :)

Jim,

Port 53 is your DNS service. When ever you type in a url in your browser and surf a request is sent to a name server on port 53 to translate the url to ip address.

K - I'm just wondering why the SME box would be doing that and not the client's local browser.

Thanks! :)

Because SME is running the DNS server (named).

If you runs your e-smith as server or server/gateway mode with dhcp on and your client (workstation) is using dhclient then it may be deal to the allocation of the dns to client by the e-smith dhcpd.

You may try to define your client with your ISP dns instead. Thus such avoid e-smith acting as a namecaching server.
