Gateway IP = 192.168.65.1
« on: March 10, 2003, 11:28:32 PM »
Hi,

I have an e-smith 4.1.2 in dialup server/gateway mode.  For some testing I want to have it fetch its mail from another gateway.  When I open the e-smith manager and select review configuration there is a line which reads Gateway = 192.168.65.1  This must be some default value as I have never entered the 65 net into this box.

I need to alter this gateway IP address, however I cannot find it anywhere in the config nor by grepping around.  How do I change this address?

Thanks for any hints

Did you try setup mode yet (login with admin/yourpw)?

Yes, I have walked through all those steps, but there is no gateway IP field.  Only dns etc.

Did you install the server or did someone else? Because if you installed it on about page 4 or 5 of the admin interface you would have been asked to setup the local network parameters, which most likely defaulted to 192.168.65.1 (not always the same number). To change this number you need to be sitting in front of the computer or bring up a remote shell using putty (or similar) and login to the box as admin (not root). You cannot change this IP number from the web interface. Once you have a terminal up, logged in as admin, select option 2 (Configure this Server) and follow the prompts. FYI that IP (192.168.65.1) is the address of your E-smith Server/Gateway, so I can't understand why you would possibly want to change it unless the other mail server has the same subnet???

If you want your server to connect via another gateway, there is provision to enter that other gateway IP in the Configuaration panel, log on to the console as admin and go through the Configuration settings. Changing your own servers IP is not the answer.

Hi,

In my text mode setup there is no gateway IP enter page.  Could it be because I am currently running in Dialup Gateway / Server mode?  Can I set the gateway IP manually in a template or config file?  I'm just curious why this IP is showing up in the view config page when there is no option to access or change it...

regards

Dear Tor
In dial up gateway/server mode your actual gateway IP is generally provided automatically by your ISP so you cannot set it to anything else than what it is, note your local IP is different to your gateway IP.

If you have a second server (or other device) on your network that is acting as a gateway you can tell your first server to get its internet access from (via) the second server (or device), this is the gateway IP setting that you would change on your first server.

You change this in the Server Console, Configure this server option after you have logged on to your server as admin..
Step through the options till you get to "Select master DNS server address", where it says quite clearly "You may need to specify an IP address here if there is a firewall between this server and the Internet.

Firewall=gateway

This is where you enter the local IP of the second server (or device) that is acting as a gateway for your first server.

Please read all the screens carefully, it all makes sense if you take the time to absorb what the instructions are saying to you.

Hope this helps

Ray,

I did not immediately understand that the dns config screen = the gateway.

Thanks a lot!

I understand that the gateway ip is given by the isp when using dial up but when I use dsl the gateway is blank. is there a way where can i get this IP and where I must put it so it appears in the gateway ip space? I had use a vpn between two networks with dial up succesfully but with adsl I haven't had any success using the same servers (5.5) .
Any hint would be great .

Thanks
