Network time server sync frequency

Network time server sync frequency
« on: March 11, 2003, 03:11:38 AM »
Dear all

Can anyone tell me how often the sme server will synchronise itself with an external time server eg ntp.mel.nml.CSIRO.AU, and is it possible to change the time or frequency that sme will sync itself. Is there a template to be modified ie create a custom-template ?

I want to set the network time server in server manger, Date & time panel.
Problem is I have a dial up service and don't want the time server to be dialling up and connecting to the Internet just to sync the server time, but only to sync time when the server is already connected to the Internet (which is generally for predefined periods daily).

Thanks
Ray Mitchell

Hi,

I had the same problem, but I am on a DOD ISDN service - the system kept dialing up every few minutes to sync the time, this was also reported on this board a while back.  It would be interesting to find out what the frequency should be, and see if we could implement an option that synced the time at a preset interval (once per day would be sufficient for my needs) say at 00:00.
Andrew.

I have had the sme ntp time server sync enabled for a couple of days now, and looking at /var/log/ messages log it appears that the sme syncs with the time server every time a dial up connection is established, but not at any other time, even after being connected for 4 or 5 hours.

The sme server dials up 2 or 3 times a day and ntp syncs appear in the logs only after each connection.
