Verizon DSL Suddenly Not Working on E-Smith 5.5
« on: March 20, 2003, 07:25:59 AM »
I have Verizon DSL service running for about a month now.  Suddenly this morning I lost all connection to the Internet.  I got the following entries from /var/log/messages repeated over and over:

Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 adsl-connect: ADSL connection lost; attempting re-connection.
Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-108
Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 pppd[21904]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 pppd[21904]: Using interface ppp0
Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 pppd[21904]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 pppoe[21912]: PADS: Service-Name: ''
Mar 19 02:46:27 server1 pppoe[21912]: PPP session is 305
Mar 19 02:46:59 server1 pppd[21904]: No response to PAP authenticate-requests
Mar 19 02:46:59 server1 pppd[21904]: Connection terminated.
Mar 19 02:46:59 server1 pppoe[21912]: read (asyncReadFromPPP): Input/output error
Mar 19 02:46:59 server1 pppoe[21912]: Sent PADT
Mar 19 02:46:59 server1 pppd[21904]: Exit.

Any ideas why this happens all of a sudden?   I have even tried going back from an old backup but I get the same results....

Cheers,
Manny

I too am having problems with verizon adsl. I was recently converted from a fixed
ip address to pppoe ( not by choice). I receive the identical messages in the messages file, but am able to connect using the windows software. Are you still having problems? Verizon is useless in troubleshooting my connection.

A friend of mine had the same problem.  I corrected it by doing the following.

When setting up the the user name for pppoe add the domain name,

username@verizon.net

and not just username

if you just use the user name, it did not work.  It appears verzion has changed their authentication methods.

I hope this helps.

I believe I tried adding the verizon.net in the user name but still did not work.  Also, everything works when I connect from Windows or from my D-LinkDSL router with just my user name.  I suspected that some file must have been corrupted and restored from and old Ghost image backup but still no go.

Finally, I tried upgrading to ver 5.6 and it's been working since.
