Cannot received POP3 Mail - suspect port 110
« on: March 30, 2003, 01:50:50 AM »
I am unable to received pop3 mail using Outlook or Outlook Express on PC’s connected to my internal network. The PC’s are running XP and Win98.

I get the following Error code;
Unable to connect to the server. (account; fred.bloggs@ntlworld.com, POP3 Server; pop.ntlworld.com, error number; 0x800ccc0e)

Both PC’s have been working O.K until recently and my Webmail (multi-drop) is still sending and receiving O.K. on this server.

On the XP machine I am able to dial up the ISP using a modem connected to a serial port. Once I disable the LAN card this, in effect, by-passes the SME Server.
Send and receive pop3 mail then works O.K.
This seems to point the problem at the SME Server.

I then tried to telnet to my ISP’s POP3 server on port 110.
This is successful on the dial up connection AND fails through the SME Server;
eg
>telnet 62.253.162.52 110
>Connecting To 62.253.162.52...Could not open connection to the host, on port >110. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly >respond  after a period of time, or established connection failed because >connected host  has failed to respond.

In the Server manager config I have checked the “other email settings” option and have POP and IMAP server access set to public.

My server is; SME Server V5.5 - Servergateway

Please help ? Any suggestions greatfully received.

O.K. so no one else will reply !!
That means no one spotted the deliberate mistake !!
For your information, I went over my settings again and the "other email settings" option for POP and IMAP should have been set to private and not public. It appears Port 110 was being blocked in the wrong direction.

The public/private setting allows you to deny access to your _own_ server from outside the local network, you should still be able to obtain connections with external pop3 servers.

We have had trouble in two sites delivering mail to ntlworld.com addresses due to timeouts, maybe there is a server problem at their end?
