Sluggish performance on iBays
« on: April 02, 2003, 05:28:31 PM »
Hi,

Version 5.5 was superb, and when I upgraded to 5.6, the performance of iBays has dropped dramaticaly, like being on a very bad 56K modem...  even though the hardware hasn't changed at all (Ethernet 100 with 3C905C adapters).

I get better performance downloading a file from the internet (with the SME as the gateway), than loading it from an iBay.

Idea anyone ?

Thanks,

Francis

Thanks for the suggestion, but the 3C59X driver is already the one selected...  Is there a need to specify another type of card than the one proposed by the system ?

Your setting agrees with the bug fix.
Perhaps try a different brand of NIC ??

I also am more pleased with version 5.5 than with 5.6.
A lot has changed, kernel, security, filtering, dns.
Version 5.5 worked fine of 64Mb but 5.6 needs more.
I run it on 128Mb.
Security makes it much slower and I am not sure if there still are dns problems in 5.6.
So try more memory if you don't have much installed.
Also try connecting to \ip-adres\ibayname in stead of \servername\ibayname.
For troubleshooting you can ad a line to the hosts file on your windows client.
In Windows NT/2000/XP that should be in %windows%\system32\drivers\etc.
The hosts file should always have an example of how to use it.
Just ad ip-adress (tab) www.servername.com
I think this is enough for starters to troubleshoot your problem.

Hello all,

Just to make sure the system was up-to-date, I dropped an additional 128MB SIMM in the system.

Now the thing is that even though the previous answers to my question were about 3COM drivers, I'm quite sure they are OK (3C509 as proposed) because the only problem could be described as follows :

- I download a file through SME from the Internet in, say, 25 seconds, and at the end of the download, my PC flushes its buffer to actually save that file onto the SME's iBay, and there it takes about 55 seconds, way slower than what you might expect from an 100Mbps Ethernet link...

I saved the same file to another workstation, and it took about 3 seconds.  This was just to make sure that all ethernet adapters from the clients were OK

Does this sound familiar to someone ?
