SME server crash when accessing webmail from outside

This is one that will take some noodling.

The situation is this.  I have SME 5.6 unsupported running on a PII with 256 meg of ram and a 10 gig hd.  When ever I access webmail from an external IP the external interface stops responding and I have to log in from an internal ip, and reset the machine.  (service network restart does not work).  But all the while I can ping the external IP from the box or any internal box but request times out if I ping outside the box.

If I access webmail from an internal IP, everything works as expected.  This is the oddest bug I have ever seen.  Things I have done that MIGHT be a factor.  The box was built as 5.6 then a 5.5 backup to desktop was restored to it.  I presume that is a common occurrence.  I applied the VPN 'fix' (which seems to have helped the VPN) Updated the glibc as discussed in http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=6523.msg23442#msg23442.  Installed PHPMyAdmin, Netjuke.  Also PHPbb, and accompanying MySQL databases have been installed for several ibays.

The only thing I saw that was odd in the /var/log/messages around the time of the 'crash' was a reference to a USB device being initialized.  I am not aware of any  USB support on that box, but I guess it may have something on the MOBO that I don’t use.

If anyone can help me I will greatly appreciate it.  I have considered building a new 5.6 box and restoring a backup to that box to try to rule out any Hardware issues, but I think it really has to be 5.6 related in someway because 5.5 ran flawlessly on this same hardware with out so much as a burp for many months.  All problems have appeared since I upgraded to 5.6.
