domain and windows logon
« on: April 13, 2003, 05:31:12 PM »
is there an article around that describes in detail how to configure the SME server to create a new user that can be logged onto as 'my documents' when windows logs onto the domain.

at the moment, i can currently set the user Admin on the server to be 'My Documents'  on the windows machine that is on the network.

If i create a new user on the SME server, its doesnt show up on the root of the server when browsing the server over the network.
the 2 network folders that show up are Admin and Primary
if i create an i-bay, this also shows up

I think the biggest problem at the moment before i do any of this, is that i cannot logon the domain of the server.
if i try to make my windows XP machine join the domain 'e-studio17.net' (which is my domain) i get the error: A domain controller for the domain e-studio17.net could not be contacted.

Plz help me find an article to guide me in the right direction or possibly help me! :)

Ed,
Is Samba started on your box.   Have you set up the workgroup in the server manager.

These are two important bits that you should look at first.

I think you have already got connections peer to peer. ie you have mapped drives. You need to delete all these connections before you can log on to the domain controller. I had the same problem.

Be careful as when you log in to domain it sets up a roaming profile by default. If you use the same name to log into more than 1 computer you can run into difficulty if resources are not the same. You have the option to convert the roaming profile to one for just that computer and may want to do it.

Also if any peer computers share drives you should set them up with fixed ip's or your servers drives will appear to be on the peer computer.

I had the same problem but this is what worked for me. I made my machine name the same as my account name on esmith and the it worked.

EX. username jbloe computername needs to be jbloe also. Give this a try
