Topic: specifying the external device

I am setting up a box running SME server and on top of that a virtual machine
load balancing 3 2Mbit ADSL connections. It looks like:

LAN---[eth0  SME  tap0 --- ePipe eth 1,2,3] --- Routers -- I-Net

Therefore I need to run the SME server in gateway mode with tap0 as external
device. How can I manually specify the external device? (Which in this case
is a virtual device). Using the setup it is only possible to use eth0, eth1.
