Received mail disappears

Received mail disappears
« on: April 16, 2003, 01:53:03 PM »
I have installed SME server 5.5, it appears to be working alright in that it is sitting between my Nokia IP55 ADSL router and my 8 port hub and email and web is working OK on my PC using Outlook and Internet Explorer.
My local domain on the e-smith box is elmswood.net, I use Demon to host my mail and receive mail to elmswood.co.uk and kilner.demon.co.uk. If I enable webmail I can send mail OK and e-smith collects the mail from Demon but then it disappears being returned to the user about a week later as undeliverable. I cannot find the mail using my user account or my admin account - how do I let webmail know about elmswood.co.uk and kilner.demon.co.uk? Should I be using virtual domains?

Also I have not been able to administer my e-smith box remotely despite setting the flags to enable this.

Any help gratefully received.

What exactly disappears? I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to here. Sent mail from your SME? Mail downloaded from Demon? Something else?

I think you may be confused about how the email system works. The SME will handle "elmswood.net" email addresses. It sounds like you're using some method to retrieve mail from outside accounts, "elmswood.co.uk" and "kilner.demon.co.uk". SME will act like a regular email client, downloading the messages off those servers and dumping them into your SME account. The SME doesn't have anything to do with those accounts/servers other than grabbing the mail for you. Webmail is just an HTML-based interface for the SME's mail system, so likewise it won't have anything to do with your other accounts.

Define "administer". You can't VPN into it? You can't access Server Manager? You can't SSH into a prompt?

Thanks for your reply Bill.

If I send mail from SME Webmail it goes out OK with no problems.

If SME collects mail from Demon I don't know where it goes. I probably naiively assumed that if I had a user 'dave' set up that any mail addressed to dave @elmswood.co.uk or dave @kilner.demon.co.uk would appear in the Webmail for dave.

You say that SME will download the messages and dump them into my SME account, how then can I access them? I appreciate that Webmail is an HTML based interface to SME's mail system but how else can I see the mail held in the system?

As for the remote administration I have been trying to access server manager using https.

Just a bit more info regarding the remote admin I can ssh to it OK but have only been able to test this from the 'outside' of my network - therefor the machine I am sshing from is on the same network as the external nic in the sme box, unfortunately the firewalls at work won't allow ssh out which is why I was trying to use https.

Still no progrss on the mail issue

Getting very frustrated now can anyone help?
