how to install a driver for ISDN-Card
« on: April 17, 2003, 04:10:23 PM »
Hello,

it is me again wiyh my old problem:
I want to install hylafax on my SME Server(Version 5.5U2).
I have an ISDN connection with an AVM Fritz!Card PCI (passive ISDN controller).

Therefore I need to install a driver for that card, but I do not know how to do it.

first question:
what exactly do I need:
isdn4linux
capi4linux
capi4hylafax

Maybe there is somebody here, who can explain for a real LINUX-dummie?

Thank you, Claudia.

Robert

Someone I know had a similar problem with a Windows PC. He couldn't get his fax software to play with his ISDN modem, so in the end he stuck his old analog modem back in just for faxing.
I have no experience whatsoever with ISDN and I'm sure what you want can be accomplished if you're really determined, but I would suggest you get an external analog modem. If you'd gone to a local thrift store and bought an old modem for 10 euros, you could have been faxing months ago. Bonuses are greater flexibility, you can fax and surf the internet at the same time, and you have better hardware support from HylaFax.

Only a few ISDN modems support fax.
ISDN is digital communication, fax is analog.

Hi Robert

Thank you for your answer.

I know that that it is easy with an external modem.
I did it.
and then I thought, it can't be that difficult with that ISDN card.
Thats why I asked.

Happy easter, Claudia.

Have you seen this article:
http://www.linux-magazin.de/Artikel/ausgabe/2000/10/Capi/capi.html
If I understand this correctly, the only thing you need is capi4hylafax. The rest is provided by the kernel and by the isdn4k-utils. Mind you, that I don't even begin to fathom how ISDN works or what CAPI means, so I may be wrong. You'll probably get better answers on the hylafax and isdn4k/isdn4linux mailing lists.

I Installed an AVM Fritz! PCI on SUSE 8.2.
The harwareinfo says it needs:
i4l-base
i4l-isdnlog
capi4linux
Maybe it's availebel for Redhat 7.3, I didn't check. See link (in german) http://capi4linux.thepenguin.de/faq.shtml
