I have just installed sme on a virtual pc in vmware and no matter how I configure it i cant get it to talk to my network and the internet.

My host pc is running windows xp pro sp1 the computer connects to the internet through a router which provides its IP through DHCP has anyone managed to get it to work? I have seen posts where people have but there isnt much adivce. Any advice would be creatly apreciated.

I am running vmware 4

If you want more information just post and i will try to provide it

Cheers

I have tested successfully on vmware v3.  You need to:

create new virtual machine
set network mode to 'Bridged' everyhting else can be defaulted.

Put the SME CD into the drive and power on the virtual machine.
Run through a normal install and configure everything as if it were a seperate machine on your network and it should work fine (i.e. give it a valid IP address etc)

Hi,

as TimH describes, set up your virtual machine. Initially, try it in server mode only, that will confirm that your system is working properly. It is a bit more complicated when you want to set it to server/gateway and actually test it in that mode.

Settting it up as server only will confirm that it is working okay, just as another "server" on your network.

HTH,

Andre
(PS: I have vmware 3.2 working in all kinds of config with SME Server, not a problem)

I ran e-smith on W2K/vmware 3 and 4 successfully in server only and server and gateway configs, I had to add HD to use soft RAID and bridged NICs to use the gateway config.
The only problem I had was the networking that were 10bT instead of 100bT...
