Help with Raid, please.
« on: April 28, 2003, 08:14:46 AM »
Hi All,
I have tried to follow the instructions on the FAQ regarding the problem with raid only seeing the HDD's as half the correct size. In the Bios it shows my disks as Primary Master and Secondary Slave, although I only have 1 HDD attached to the secondary IDE and it is jumpered as master. I can't change the setting in the bios to normal so I will have to use a different PC but will I still have to do the following:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
This assumes that they are set as Primary Master and Secondary Master, can someone tell me what I should type for Primary Master and Secondary Slave?
Thanks,
Del

To me, this sounds like a BIOS limitation, what does the BIOS report the drive size as?  Also, be sure you don't have any type of cylinder limitation jumpers installed, I believe these cap at an 8GB limit and then you use BIOS overlay software, such as MaxBlast/EzDrive to provide BIOS emulation for the full drive size.  I would check your motherboard vendor's site to see if there are any applicable BIOS updates.  What is the total drive size?

As FYI, the command you posted above simply low-level formats the drive.

/dev/hda = Primary Master
/dev/hdb = Primary Slave
/dev/hdc = Secondary Master
/dev/hdd = Secondary Slave

I don't think doing a low-level format will yeild the results you are wanting.

Hope this helped,
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
I have now got a new Gigabyte MB with AMD CPU and I have followed the instructions on the FAQ regarding raid showing HDD as half size. I have reinstalled SME 5.6 but now when it reboots it goes to a black screen with LI (or L1) and stays there. I have searched the forums but as you can imagine LI and L1 came up with over 1516 results!  Most of them had the LI in a word somewhere. I decided to reinstall again and still the same result. Any ideas what I should do next?
Thanks in advance,
Del

While installing, did you create a boot diskette?
You should boot from it and if everything ok otherwize with server, type
lilo -v as root in the command line to rewrite MBR. this may fix it.

Hi All,
OK I've got it working now, appears to be all OK, the diskusage addon shows them as 56gig now so I've lost 4gig of space which is better than the 32gig I lost before! Is this normal or have I missed something here. I will install Darrell May's Raid Monitor addon and see if it is working OK as raid.
Again, thanks for all the help,
Del
