DNS keeps crashing out
« on: May 02, 2003, 09:01:51 PM »
Hi,

Every thirty minutes or so the DNS on the SME server keeps stopping for no reason - all other services work.  I had previously on this system an IDE based LS 120 drive, but replaced it for a standard floppy, and now I can't see anything wrong with the unit.  I did a new install today and as I said keep getting this problem with this machine.

The problem also occurs if you try to change anything in the hosts panel in the server manager.

Anything I can try?  I have done a new install, but I am wondering whether this actually erases all data on the hard drive, or should I think about erasing using a drive eraser first?

Thanks, as I am pulling my hair out over this one!

Andrew.

Hi,

I am 99% sure this is due to a network card issue - when this happened after a hdd wipe and reinstall again, removing and reinserting the plug into the card caused the problem to now go away - I can add items to the hostnames and addresses panel now without problems, and I am waiting to see if I get a DENS server crash.  The nic is a built-in Compaq Netinteligent nic, if I put another Nic in the machine in a few days if the problem still persists, can I just tell Sme to ignore the built-in card?  I have had a look in bios to see if it can be disabled with no joy.

Thanks,
Andrew.

I had the same proplem.
On Systemstart the bootmonitor hangs on "DNS". But in the Servermanager seems everything OK.
nearly on every reboot I had FS-Errors and I thought it was a probplem with the harddisk. I made a new install with a new disk, restore the saved   datas and everything was OK.
If I see your problems , I think it is a BUG in SME-Database or something like this.
