Mail relay denied
« on: July 01, 2000, 03:11:02 AM »
I recently installed the esmith on our office network. We have a 256DSL connection to our T3 connected network and is coming in to eth0, which is set to one of our IPs. (previously all our office machines were set to qualified IPs) Eth1 is is on the 192 block and that IP is the gateway for al lour office workstations which are each on an out of that 192 block. It installed easy and was up as soon as IPs were set. We are not running the esmith mail server - our mailserver is on our network on the other end. Problem is with mail relaying. All email sent outside of our domain is denied relay - and I took the added measure to include the outside IP, of the esmith machine, in our relay-domains file (we run sendmail on a linux slackware box.) I believe that the esmith is not providing the IP or domain name of the machine sending mail to the mailserver, so it is denied relay. Conversely if I change the outgoing mailserver of the workstation to my DSL providers mailserver and they include us to relay - it works! - And if I move a box outside the esmith, and give it a qualified IP (even set to the same IP the esmith is on, after shutting it down) then, again everything works. Please help.

It sounds like your problem is with sendmail on slackware linux, rather than with e-smith. Your test with your ISP's mail relay seems to confirm that. I don't know enough about either (sendmail, slackware) to help you.

If you identify a problem with the e-smith server, please let me know and I will fix it ASAP.
