Confused by Multipop
« on: May 06, 2003, 03:02:05 PM »
Still confuddled by what I have to do to make email work as I want it. I am a total Linux newbie and I found this very simple to set up in the only email server I have ever configured, MDaemon.

I have a number of domain names. All email is stored in POP accounts on my ISP's server and some with wildcard (eg all email for *@xxx.co.nz goes into one pop account)

I want to download all the email to a local server and set some rules for distribution to local users. eg fa@xxx.co.nz goes to user fa, *@xxx.co.nz goes to gavin

I have installed e-smith-multipop-0.1-4.noarch.rpm (Stephen Nobles RPM) and it shows up in the server-manager okay.
I have set the following:
E-mail retrieval mode: Multipop
Secondary mail server: gromit.utopia.co.nz

POP user account (for multi-drop): is valid
POP user password (for multi-drop): is valid
Select sort method (for multi-drop): Default
Select sort header (for multi-drop):

Then under dungog.net option "multiple pop3's"
I have a table with one red entry but I am unsure how to work this.
Status Account Password Server Name Deliver to:
on xxxx yyyy gromit.utopia.co.nz *

Arrgh, I havent even got a good feel for email on this system works.

Please help a confused newbie from New Zealand.

Hi Gavin,
I am also a relative noobie, and I tried to get this rpm to work without success, where did you get the rpm? I downloaded it from the e-smith.org/contribs site.
I am using a cable modem to connect to the internet, what are you using? I received an email from Stephen Noble telling me that this version didn't work with cable modems. So I installed Vincent Filalis multipop rpm on my test server, this worked OK but I never got it to sort out the email that was sent to a catch all pop3.
I have purchased the latest version from dungog.net and I still couldn't get it working, so I have emailed Stephen and I got a prompt reply with some settings, I will try these and see. If you're  using a dial up modem then the version you have should work, I think. Any how the account in red is the first one that is setup in the email retreival panel in server-manager, if you set up one of your wildcard accounts here it will get checked, downloaded and distributed to the users by sme (this works great, but for only one pop3 account). On the dungog.net option "multiple pop3's" there is a link that says "Click here" to add a pop account for mail collection. You just fill in the server, user etc and if you want the email to go to a dedicated user put that in here also, if you leave a * in the deliver to box it should sort out the mail as the default one does. Stephen told me to check the status box. I haven't tried this yet and I will try to get round to it tonight and I will post the results here. There is some info on the dungog.net web site.
Hope this helps,

HI Gavin,
I have set up the new multipop as in my last posting and it works great. Try your settings the same (if you are using a cable modem you will need the latest rpm from dungog.net). Stephen Noble is very good with the support and replies very quickly, thanks Stephen.
Best of luck,

Seems to be working now. I am clearing my second POP folder.

The IMP webmail system is quite good also.

I will have to get into some more advanced filtering in the future but for now it seems okay.
