Network stucture question
« on: May 08, 2003, 09:14:03 AM »
Due to a quirk of circumstances I find myself with both DSL and Cable Internet.  The cable has a GB limit but is exceptionally fast and the DSL is unlimited but only 512Mb.

I have each one plugged into an SME5.6u4 box and from there to a 100Mb switch, but the switches are not connected to each other because I have come to the limit of my meagre networking knowledge.  Can anyone suggest some way to manage the bandwidth.  As a general rule I would like to browse through the Cable connection but when I want to, say, download the new SME ISO I would prefer to set it up at night and go to sleep and wake up to a new ISO without impacting my Cable data limit.  All this from my WinXP desktop.

As a last issue worth considering, ports 25,80 and 110 are blocked on the Cable but not the DSL.

Ideas?

You could set your browser proxies http, ftp etc to use the different machines dependent on your requirements.

Its a bit limiting but it would be a start.

Yes, as I was writing the original question that thought did pop into my head and I think it is a good place to start, easier said than done for me but I will look into it.

It is only a short term thing, I inherited the cable connection when I moved into the house, but the contract is up soon.

Gaz,

If you are not opposed to manually changing network settings, you could try this :-

Daisy chain the two hubs / switches together, making sure each SME server has unique IP addresses.

Then set a static IP address and settings for your desktop.

All you need to do to switch between the two connections is to change the default gateway setting on your desktop between the IP addresses of your SME servers.

If you run W2K or WinXP as your desktop OS, this is easy and does not even require a reboot.

Thanks for the input.

I gave the adsl box a static local ip in the subnet of the cable box, turned off dhcpd and connected the adsl local net to the cable local net.  Now I can talk directly to the secondary box without going via the internet.  I will browse via the cable and if I want a large file I will ssh to the adsl box and ftp or wget it.

Cheers,
