SME System Requirements
« on: May 14, 2003, 01:34:42 AM »
I may have missed it but I didn't see where the SME hardware requirements are defined.  I'm running 5.1.2 on a P90 with 48m ram.  I understand 5.6 hardware requirements would preclude an upgrage on my P90.  Does anyone know what 5.5 hardware requirements are?  Which one would be the best choice to install on my P90.  Or, should I just stick with 5.1.2?  I'm using the SME only for home use with 2 Windows and 1 Linux box connected to a cable modem. Using email/webmail and NAT primarily

Thanks.

Ever hear of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."? So, what's broke? Why update?

Aside from security updates, are there new features that you'd like to add? Need to add? Is your current setup working well for you? Are you trying to learn what's new? Do you want to handle the potential troubleshooting issues?

There's always a debate as to when or if to upgrade, and often times, the simplest thing to do is nothing, especially for a minor upgrade.

Hi Mark,

I'm interested to find out whether you upgraded SmeSever in the end, and if so, ho it went.

I run a similar configuration here - a small old entry level Pentium PC with 64Mb RAM and a 900Mb disk (which is my problem - the disk is not quite big enough) running SmeServer 5.1.2 - and it works well.

I have been offered some old Compaq servers (Prolinea 1000s with 486DX2 66MHz CPUs, 100MB RAM, and 5 x 1GB SCSI RAID disks) The disks are appealing, and I've heard that x86 CPUs are supported - although of course P90 is the recommended minimum.

I've also been offerred an old Compaq ProSignia with a P150 CPU - but it only has 16MB RAM - and I don't feel like buying old 70ns SIMMS for it - I figure that if I have to spend money I may as well buy a 2nd hand PC performance wise.

Anyway - I tried loading the 5.6 CD on the ProLinea - and it failed from the floppy boot loader program - saying insufficent memory.

Do you think 5.5 might work, or should I stick with 5.1.2
One other person here suggested that 6.0 may have lower h/w requirements that 5.5 - any comments on that.

Thanks for feedback in advance.
