LOG's of users traffic?

LOG's of users traffic?
« on: May 18, 2003, 05:18:51 AM »
I'm using SME-Server for my local cafe. We have about 20 laptops wired for anybody to use. Well we've run into 'situations' where users have went where they wern't allowed. With my old DHCP server I had an ability to keep logs of sites the users have accessed. In SME-Server can I monitor where the users go? I have used software on the client PC to record all traffic, but people are smart enough to turn it off :-(.

So any help would be loved.

PS: I want to create a database of sites that users use, so I can filter out all the 'bad' ones. I did infact use a filter server, but it blocked to many sites.

John,

Firstly there are several different contribs I know of that can help you out:

1. For logging, SARG does an alright job of tracking http requests, but thats all, no ftp/p2p logging, but does log browsing fine.

2. For filtering there are 2 contribs I know of, Dan's Guardian and squidGuard, both of which can be found at contribs.org. I have no experence with DG but have heard great things about it. I personally use squidGuard because it does the job I need it to do, and I have never needed to try DG out.

You should try both DG and squidGuard to see which one you prefer, I think both have an option to enter in manually web sites to allow/block from the database, this I am not too sure with DG but I know you can with squidGuard.

Other than that I dont know of anyway of logging/filtering for SME :-)

Enjoy!

Ron,

I fine ntop too confusing, which is why I use netprobe, it shows less information, but in tables I can understand, and I can range information via date/protocol/etc, which is why I switched over to netprobe, but ntop shows a hell of a lot more information, and that's why I didnt like it becasue I could not understand it all.

But just my opinion :-)
