I was wondering how to configure my server to back up more then 400mb.  The back up option says it will only back up up to 400mb how do I increase this size or configure it to back up no matter what size.

The backup option will back up whatever you have in the relevant directories on your server.  If it's saying 400MB, that's because that's all the data you have in those directories.

I had like six gigs but when I go in the back up restore it says*note a backup can not exceed 400mb* and when I try it it hits 400 and hangs there

What about your free space?

6 GB of data being compessed down to 400 MB?
That is really a pretty good ratio.

However the message:

" it will only back up to 400mb"

indicates that there is no room for anything bigger than that.

The fact that it 'hangs' when it reaches that number
seems to confirm this.

Check the free space of where the backup is being saved to
and I think you will find your answer.

The place I am backing up too have 40+ GB of free space.  But thanks for the thought.  The message is mixed in with the rest of the text but bolder in the back up web console

I suspect the reason for the confusion you're seeing is that the message you describe doesn't appear on a stock SME installation--I've certainly never seen it, and I just checked on my SME 5.6 server's web manager, and it doesn't say anything like what you've described.

What version of SME are you using, and have you installed any third-party backup software?
