poor performance retrieving files

Retrieving files from the server is slow, using either ftp or samba.
downloading from server: samba 6 Mb/min
uploading: samba 30 Mb/min
(ftp numbers are slightly better)

My server is a P100/64Mb on a 10Mbit network. server nic Realtek ... (ne2000), client nic 3c905.
Retrieving files from the server can be even slower then downloading (through the server) from the internet!

I don't remember having these performance problems using e-smith 3.1 or the early 4.0 beta's. It think it started up from beta 7. (now I'm up to beta 10)

Pieter,
Your data rates are quite low for e-smith server. I am using e-smith 4.0 beta 7 and its quite fast on file transfers.
My e-smith test server is a P233/64MB on a 10Mbit lan. Minimum upload/download rates are 17Mbytes/min - with higher rates depending on server activity.

Each e-smith beta has more overhead/features etc.
You may consider upgrading your processor to 233MHz if possible.
