could someone recommend a free dynamic dns provider that will work with a domain that has already been register.

also any how-to to get it setup would be great.

www.dyndns.org there is a small donation youll have to read about it. youll have to point the domain through the registar to thier dns servers and then you setup your server with that server name.

My sme 5.6 is not updating dyndns.org when it gets a new ip address.
Is there a fix for this problem?

my is not updating either, same SME version.
I am successfully updating other domains using netgear routers.
