adsl router
« on: June 26, 2003, 10:42:25 PM »
Hi, i live in south africa, just had telkom put in an adsl line, and i bought a netgear modem from duxbury.
i set a sme box before with a modem telkom supplied, but now this modem is a ethernet hub/switch as well as a router and has dhcp capability.

i am having difficulty setting up adsl with this modem.
i have done exactly the same as the previous time i set it up, with two nics
can some body help me here please?

i figure i can change the server's ip address to an ip in the range that the router would give out.
or give the router an address, and set the dedicated connection as static, and set the username and password on the router.
or leave the sme box out of it totally and just set the box to server mode.... so many options.... can anybody please help me make the best choice.
the router has a firewall as well

thanks

Matthew

Just configure it with one NIC as server-only on your LAN. If you want to serve web, mail etc., forward corresponding ports on your router to SME's internal IP.
Router will do NAT and port filtering (firewall) and your server will be just a server behind this firewall. SME has built in firewall, but you don't have to use it if you have another firewall in front of it.For simple (home) setup it is enough.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking, what is it you want to do?
You need to set up
Router =>SME=>Switch=>PCs
Your router cannot have a static ip address from the telkom side as it gets assigned dynamicly every 24 hours
The NIC interface on the router can be static and the sme can be static (in the same range of course).
It will work like this.
If you need any specific settings let me know and I'll try help!

I have basically tried configuring sme and the router in every possible way
i can think of, the only way i can get it to work is by changing sme to server only mode, and then every body works through the router, but now by doing that its sort of making sme useless,
i want to connect it up so that sme is in server and gateway mode, so that i use its mail features, and all the other little 'big' things that you miss when its not there

this is the way i have set it up before
router - sme - switch/hub - workstations

this is the way i want to set it up again but seems impossible
the router has DHCP... any ideas??
i used a cross over cable last... and have tried with a normal and cross over now.

i am so stuck, please help

Fist, get the ip address of the router's ethernet port (the one connecting to your sme), then in the consol, set up your box for server+gateway, set the ip address of the nic(connecting to the router) to static ip in the same range of the router for example my routers ethernet address is 192.168.10.200, so I set my NIC to 192.168.10.100.
complete the consol set up and reboot when asked.
after reboot log in as root and try to ping the router and see what happens, if successful then try ping outside eg webmail.co.za
Please just make sure you have a link light on your NIC!

just one little thing
when setting up using static IP, nyou have to put in the IP (which i know) the subnet and the gateway... what is the gateway?
is it the IP of the router or the IP of the server?

It is the IP of your "gateway" to the internet.

Could be your router, firewall or SME box. What ever transfers your internal traffic to be external traffic.

As James said, it is your gateway, which in your case is the router, so just leave it blank.

Yeah I am from SA
Let us know what happens

Hi there Matthew.

Did you come right with your set up?
I have to set up a similar scenario, and have the same questions as you had.
If you have any other information that may be of use, I would really appreciate it.

I'm also from SA
