Well, you could try Mitel SME :-)

Depending on your wishes:

- Do you need a server?
- Do you need a desktop
- What would you like to do ?

Write up a nice little wish list and more answers will follow

I am running sme 5.6u4.

I would just like to use my redundant laptop to practise learning linux, most of what i have found require alot of hardrive space & ram.

Sound like a Mandrake 9.1 user to me. Good general purpose display of Linux.
The other suggestions are good too. Demo Linux 3.0 :' )

Part of the answer you seek lays in trying different distros, as it is a personal choice.

Also readup at http://www.distrowatch.com

hope this helps.....
I still don't have an absolute fav - maybe SME 6.0 beta2 with lynx,   ;' )

look for roll your own linux this is the best way to learn linux. another thing as others have said on many boards is if you want to learn linux you have to shut off all windows machines for 2 weeks. get a good linux book and tutorials. redhat bible is a good one but extensive. there are a couple sams books also that come with working linux distros. and one book i think is great is linux for dummies. I have the linux admin for dummies and has given me allot of help as well as the redhat bible.
