TTSSH & Port Forwarding
« on: July 06, 2003, 09:07:32 PM »
Hi all!

Has anyone installed the TTSSH and port forwarding in order to see the server-manager with a browser?
I followed the instructions I found at "How to use SSH to remotely access Server-Manager" see this page please:

http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/index.htm?frame=http%3A//sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/Header.htm

but after doing everything I got this error from TTSSH:

A program on the local machine attempted to connect to a forwarded port
The forwarding request was denied by the server. The connection
   has been closed.

I will greatly appreciate if you could give me more detailed steps on how implement this option, any experience or comment would be appreciated.

You don't have to do all that at all to access server manager remotely. Simply make a connection to your server using "putty" a free ssh client. In the settings you will see an option called tunnels. Go to the box that is labeled source port ( under add new forwarded port) and type in 80 and then in the box called destination type the ip address of ther server (the local ip address)   ie 192.168.0.1:80 . Notice I have added the 80 on to the end of the ip address.  Now login to your server. To access the server manager type http://localhost/server-manager

This can be used to access any machine behind the SME server provided you have used the correct port settings. I use it to access remote servers and then control my customers machines by using VNC with different ports forwarded for each machine. A note of caution though. If you have any weak passwords change them before using SSH as although they don't give you any rights over the server they can still be used to forward ports.  Putty can be downloaded form here

Tanks Andy

I followed your instructions but nothing. I´m using 5.6u4 which, as far as I know, has some problems to allow run the server-manager out of the local net.

Which version of SME are you using?

The howto I mentioned first say that 5.6 X11forwarding is disable by default

May be I make a mistake and now I have to rollback the changes I did.

Let me review wath I did

Tell me more about what is happening. Can you at least login to a secure shell using putty. if you can then right click on the top of the putty screen and go to event viewer and tell me if it shows that the ports have been forwarded. Have you enabled remote access in the remote access panel of the server manager.  You can by the way run server manager outside of the local network by adding the ip address of the machine that you are trying to access it by in remote access and give it a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. This will work providing you are trying to access it from a host with a static ip. I don't understand why You are asking about X11 forwarding I don't see how this has any relevance to what you are trying to achieve.

Related to the X11Forwarding you are right. With SME I can not open a GUI.

I suppose the way I write make you feel I’m destroying your language, I apologize and tank for your kindness. My language is Spanish.
