I have a curious irregular IP assignment behaviour on part of my home network.
Network configuration:
Server with E-Smith 5.6 connected to both a cablemodem and a hub with four UTP extensions to provide network access on four locations to a single Win XP Pro notebook.
Two locations connect to the network and internet without difficulties all the time. On an irregular basis, however, ESmith assigns correct IP addresses for the other two locations. Usually after a timeout Win XP assigns an 'automatic private address' and the server is not pingable nor is there internet access. After several attempts to ipconfig /renew DHCP assignment from the server succeeds.
First thought that came up was a UTP wiring defect since only part of the network is involved. However that leaves the sporadic successfull DHCP assignments unexplained, apart from the fact that these are brand new Cat5E gigabyte cables.
My confusion and puzzling is complete. Any ideas?
