Tungsten C can't get past e-smith and on the Internet
« on: July 18, 2003, 10:03:46 PM »
Hello experienced e-smith and WiFi gurus,

I need some troubleshooting advice. I have an e-smith 5.5 (with the latest update) that's been running very well for about a year or so. Recently I added a WiFi access point to my home network and thus made my laptops go wireless. No problems with that (other than Winblows WiFi card software trouble, which I've solved successfully).

I recently got a Palm Tungsten C, which has WiFi built-in. Naturally I want to try using it to go on the Web via my home network. Unfortunately it doesn't work all the way. There are very few diagnostic screens on the Tungsten, so all I can tell is that I get connected to the access point and that I get all IP and DNS stuff from the e-smith DHCP. I can even browse the e-smith box internally, i.e. if I use a URL of the form http://e-smith/ibay it works. However as soon as I try to use a real Web URL nothing happens. All I get are timeout messages.

Is there anything I can do on the e-smith side to troubleshoot this? I don't really know where to start.

Palm, by the way suggested talking to my network administrator and upgrading the WiFi access point firmware...

Regards,
Oluf

the first thing i would do is upgrade access point firmware--what brand is it? I dont think the SME server would treat your palm any different than any other machines--its just an IP to the server

Andrew,

The access point is from an OEM in the chinese region (www.sercomm.com) and I've checked for the latest firmware. It was already installed.

The strange thing is that the access point lets the Tungsten C connect, and I get an IP address from the e-smith DHCP server. I can browse internal web ibays, but no external ones.

Thanks for helping!

to me this sounds like a problem with your Palm itself. Possibly some kind of built in firewall, feature that needs to be turned on. Because if you can get to your server just fine, I don't believe there is anything wrong there. Look into the palm

I have had similar issuses with pocet pc 2002 where its simple network configs dont pick up the dns info right. I found that the ip was supplied and gateway set but the dns wasn't set correctly. Have you tried setting all the configs manually to see if it works then?

I have not used palm before, just going on the assumption that an these ''small'' devices software gets cut to fit....

Hello guys,

Thanks for all the ideas. The Palm has limited diagnostics tools (none), so I can't really troubleshoot at that end. I tried setting DNS manually to no avail.

Funny thing is that I had a Linksys WAP11 Access Point (no routing capabilities) on loan over the weekend, and connecting via that was perfect.

So I guess that I have to blame my "noname" Access Point/Router for the problems. Oh well, I got it for free. Guess I'll go out and spend some money on a WAP11 one of these days. Bugs me, though.

If you get the IP address from you Access Point, verify (if you can) if you got dns server .
If you cannot verify with palm tools if you have a dns server, do a simple test.
Ping some web site and discover hist ip address. I´ll use a ISP for example:
If I do ping www.matrix.com.br I got this ip addres: 200.201.192.45
So I´ll try to open http://200.201.192.45 on your Tungsten C.

If it works, you have a DNS issue. Go to your Access Point Software and check WHERE to modify it.

If it don´t work , write again! I´ll have to think WHY... :-)
