Hi

Is there an easy way of getting the name server to appear to the outside?

I have a fixed IP address and I'd like to be able to deligate the name directly to my computer

Thanks
  Bruce

The easy way is to use third party DNS service like zoneedit.com or similar. Up to five domains free.
Buy domain name. Create an account with zoneedit.com. create zone for your domain and create host records for your server pointed to your IP.

Hosting your own public DNS server is possible but risky and insecure. Just use free service managed by you and maintained by professionals.

I have always wanted to know why hosting your own DNS is risky and insecure. Would someone please explain.

Thanks

Thousands of companies maintain their own Name servers. It just seemed strange why SME had it on for local networks but totally off for outside networks.
I'd also like to know it's insecure.

Has anyone made a addon which can allow it to be turned on externally?

Thanks

The best place to start looking is the "search site" feature. Search for "public DNS server" you will get some interesting results.

There is a possible HowTo here:

The previous howto wont work on 6.0 however.

I much preferred bind, but tinydns is now the default name server software.

There is also the problem of the templates automatically adding the local internal IP as the authoritive name server.

Does anyone know of a project to create an external IP contrib?

It would be nice if we can add and remove primary and secondary DNS records from the server-manager, just like any other service running on SME. I don't have the experience to do this, but may be the developers will take this into account when developing additional packages.

I'm working out the final details for a howto on this subject.  One side note: you will not be able to add primary and secondary records to the same server ever.  Primary and secondary are that way for a reason in case one goes down.  If you are hosting your site on the same server you want primary records on you don't need a secondary as the site will be down when the DNS is.

Check this topic thread here:
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=22204.0

I will be posting the howto there.  It is not an 'easy' fix but relatively straight forward as I written it hopefully.

Thanks Jeremy for your efforts. The reason why I mentioned primary and secondary is that I want the server to act as a primary for a domain while acting as a secondary for another. I have two SME servers connected with two static IP addresses. Since I have many domains, I would like them to be totally hosted on the SME servers.

Just to clarify the situation.

Thanks again.
