DHCP doesn't asign me an IP nr.
« on: July 18, 2000, 11:43:34 PM »
I installed e-smith 3.0 on my machine.A Cyrix 586 133MHz, 42MB with two ethernetadapters recognized by e-smith and a cable internet connection. I tryd every configuration. During booting Linux searches for a DHCP server to asign me a IPnr fot "ETH1" but sais it fails to find an DHCP server. I tryd using a static IP, Linux would boot okay, but i couldn't get a internetconnection. After that i downloaded e-smith 4.0, but the story with this version is the same.

I am a Linux rookie so maybe there is just someting realy stupid i'm overlooking.

PLEASE HELP!?!?!?

many thanx Rolf.

ROlf,

There are two possible explanations here:

I)  Your internet provider does not provide DHCP service, and the static IP you are assigning the e-smith server and gateway is not an IP provided by them - unlikely.

II) The "ETH1" interface is not your external interface, it is your internal interface.  There are two ways to fix/verify this: in the e-smith console configuration screen, select "Swap ethernet assignments".  Alternatively you can simply swap the ethernet cables at the back of you e-smith server and gateway.

Hope this helps,
Paul
