move HD from PIII to Celeron or PIV
« on: August 08, 2003, 01:13:18 AM »
Hi fellows, I'm wondering!! I had installed on a PIII the SME 5.6 u4, everything is working fine, but I want to install my new server in the rack, so I bought a new chasis, but is hard to find a motherboar and a PIII to fit on 1U. I can find many motherboards with Celeron or PIV that will fit ok, so is there a problem to make the switch to Celeron or PIV?? It's says it has a i686 with the PIII, so my guess is with celeron or PIV will be detected as i686 (i mean the kernel compiled for that type of processor).

If someone could guide me please..

Thanks!!

Sorry about my english!!

Yes, just make a backup to desktop, and reinstall SME again on the new computer, then restore from desktop and your configuration will not be lost.

Otherwise instead of reinstalling, make an upgrade.

Thanks for your answer!! I planed to do the upgrade mode, but what happens with all the packages I had installed?? webshare, hylafax, oscommerce, webconsole, services, etc..?? do I have to do install again!! I'don wanna do that because it was hard (at least for me) to me to make them work the way I want it!!

I red some were in this forum (I can not find ir again) that you can go from low CPU to a high CPU, the only problem is that I could run but it will no be optimized!!

So my question is 5.6 is optimized for every processor? PIII? PIV?, Celeron? maybe is optimized for PIII so the PIV will run it ok??

Even if it nos optimized for PIV, It could run anyway??maybe not full speed, but faster that my PIII at 733 Mhz compared to a PIV at 2.4 Ghz!!

Thanks for your help!!

For what it is worth, I had an Athlon 850MHz motherboard die last year. I moved the hard drive and NICs to an old PII-350 I wasn't using. It booted up with no problems.
