Win2K Domain
« on: August 21, 2003, 11:55:01 AM »
I have a very simple Win2k Active Directory Domain with about 50 users. I want to use sme-server as a departmental file server for about 10 of those users.

Can anyone offer me some pointers on how to get this server to join the domain and any issues around this. Do I have to manually create the users on e-smith? What happens if a password is changed on the win2k server? etc

Thanks
Scott

You need to configure the SME box as a BDC. That way SME will use the AD user database.
I found to how to on this site somewhere (it involves custom templates for samba)
I've done it once with an NT domain and it worket a treat...
You may have some issues with the length of the login names but there is a work around here for that as well.
Let us know how you go with AD.

It's not a trivial excercise - I found the how-to's some time ago and did my best with them.....I got as far as joining my e-smith box to the domain successfully, but got stuck on the custom templates for winbind to authenticate users from the domain. It's probably easier if your Win2k is in mixed mode, but we'd already taken the plunge and thrown the one-way switch to native -mode. If you have success let us know - especially with pointers , how-to's etc. Maybe we'll find it easier once someone who's an expert posts a how-to for Samba3 - it has much tighter support for Active Directory frokm what I've read.
